Syncing Scope Boxes: The Coordination Detail Nobody Plans For Until It Breaks
Clear scope definition across disciplines is one of those things that sounds simple but gets messy fast in Revit. If you need a refresher on scope boxes themselves, start with Scope Boxes in Revit: The Most Boring Tool You Can’t Live Without.
In Revit, scope is enforced through Scope Boxes, and one model is typically the source of truth for them. Every discipline model then needs the same scope boxes, in the same place, with the same names, so that drawing sectors match across architecture, structure, MEP and everything else on the project.
One model as the source of truth
In our workflow, that model is the BM (BIM Management) model.
It’s the source of truth not just for scope boxes, but also for:
- main levels
- grids
- matchlines
- other coordination items that discipline models either need, or need to stay aligned with
Every discipline links the BM model and takes its coordination framework from there. That part is easy to set up. Keeping it aligned over the life of the project is where it gets hard.
The problem: scope boxes don’t stand still
As design develops, the drawing sector breakdown shared across disciplines evolves. Sectors get split, merged, extended or shifted, and scope boxes have to follow.
Now multiply that by every linked discipline model on the project.
Tracking those changes and updating scope boxes manually in every model is nearly impossible. Even when it is possible, it’s not precise, because you’re redrawing or nudging boxes by eye to match something in a link. And it’s pure time waste, repeated every single time the sector breakdown changes.
On top of that, scope boxes don’t live alone. Views and references depend on them. Replace a scope box the wrong way and those dependencies are gone, and someone has to reassign them view by view.
Revit has no native tool for any of this.
What we built
So we built two tools: Copy Scope Boxes from Link and Reassign Scope Boxes to Views.
Watch the workflow on YouTube: Copy Scope Boxes from Link and Reassign Scope Boxes to Views
Copy Scope Boxes from Link
- Copies selected scope boxes from any link, placed at the link’s actual position
- Syncs existing scope boxes (matched by name) to the updated size and position of their source in the link
- Remembers and reassigns view and reference dependencies to the newly synced scope boxes, so those relationships aren’t lost on update
Reassign Scope Boxes to Views
- Auto-assigns scope boxes to existing views whose names already reference that scope box via a view name suffix
This means a consistent view naming convention does the work for you. Name the views once, and the scope box assignment follows automatically.
The net result
Scope box coordination stops being a manual chore. It becomes something that runs in seconds instead of hours, on every discipline model, every time scope boxes are added or changed.
The BM model stays the single source of truth, and every discipline model can be brought back in line with it whenever the sector breakdown changes, precisely, without redrawing a single box by hand.
