Do You Know How Many Scope Boxes Your Revit Model Has?

Scope boxes are one of the most useful tools in Revit, especially on large projects with multiple disciplines, multiple models, or several buildings on one site.

They define drawing sectors, control view extents, and keep levels and grids in check. On a large project, they quietly hold a lot of the documentation together. If you’re new to scope boxes, start with Scope Boxes in Revit: The Most Boring Tool You Can’t Live Without.

But do you actually know what you have?

Ask yourself a few simple questions about your current model:

  • How many scope boxes are there?
  • Where are they?
  • Which ones are still being used?
  • Are they on the right workset?
  • Are they pinned, so no one accidentally moves them?

And when it’s time to clean up: how do you know which ones are safe to delete?

Revit doesn’t give you a tool for that

There’s no list and no overview. You’d have to hunt through the model just to find them all, then check each one manually.

On a project with a hundred-plus scope boxes, that’s not really an option. It’s not a workflow you can do by hand, only one you can automate.

So we built one.

Scope Box Manager

Scope Box Manager, part of the Via BIM Tools bundle, lets you:

  • Spot scope boxes with zero assigned views or references - dead weight, safe to delete
  • See what’s going on across linked models without opening every link
  • Sort by dependent items and bulk-delete the ones with zero dependents
  • Sort by workset and reassign everything to the right one in one pass
  • Batch rename and batch pin - done

What used to be an impossible amount of manual checking is now a few sorted columns and a couple of bulk actions.
